During the Bubonic Plague, doctors wore these bird-like masks to avoid becoming sick. They would fill the beaks with spices and rose petals, so they wouldn’t have to smell the rotting bodies.
A theory during the Bubonic Plague was that the plague was caused by evil spirits. To scare the spirits away, the masks were intentionally designed to be creepy.
I need a Venetian plague mask.
I’m so obsessed with these.
They also filled the beaks with herbs which they believed to prevent contracting the disease.
STARLING. starling’s mask is designed also to be creepy, as a part of “her” general motif of “plague victim whose face was eaten away horribly, but who survived anyway”. (that’s “her” story.) the eyeholes in “her” mask are sensors that allow binocular vision, heat sensing radar, and a lighter, more compact version of a gundam’s scan and detect system. the whole thing is padded on the inside, but the outside is largely hammered together scrap metal, badly tarnished in places.
