gundam wing’s remarkably detailed approach to space colonization

i didn’t realize everybody didn’t know this! 

now i don’t know about the other gundam series (i think they’re similar?), but in gundam wing the colonies are referred to in clusters, as “L-1, L-2, etc” and so on until L5. this is a reference to Lagrangian points, which are a real world theoretical idea about potential space colonies and how they might function. the Lagrange points are essentially the exact locations in a cosmic balancing act where enough force would be exerted on an object to cause it to orbit in sequence. In practice it looks like this:

afaik this is actually a pretty old theory (though its application to space colonization isn’t, i don’t think) you can read more about it here. i’m horrific at math and physics both so the technical parts don’t make sense to me but it’s clear this is the basis for how gundam wing’s colonies are meant to operate. 

(in clusters i’d presume they’d need to be enclosed together in some kind of field that would cause them to be considered physically as “one”?)

the colony shapes themselves, with their inside-out design, are based on Bernal spheres, and the subsequent research by Gerard O’Neill. O’Neill was an astronaut candidate for the Apollo program, and when he was rejected he put his efforts into considering space colonization. Bernal spheres are really early design ideas for space colonies of small populations (really early, like 1930s) and O’Neill took a lot of interest in their potential sustainability. he came up with a lot of ideas, most of them based around the idea of an “inside-out” design that would apparently balance out gravity and air volumes and so on. here’s a really huge picture of a potential Bernal sphere.

 so there’s real science behind these ideas (whether it’s applied properly or not)! just thought y’all would find it interesting if you didn’t know this before.
